Dark Horse Vineyard
The 2013 harvest season followed the same patten of excellent quality as the 2012 vintage. Winter brought with itself a vast amount of rain, followed by one of the driest springs and summers in a long time. Harvest commenced about two weeks earlier than average allowing for all grapes to be picked before the arrival of the rain. In summary, the 2013 was another amazing vintage, providing all elements to make outstanding wines with mature tannins and flavors and aromas that truly show a sense of place.
Grenache is a red grape that originated in Northern Spain. Today, it is one of the most widely planted grapes in the world, with important production in Spain, Australia, California and Southern Rhone region of France. Our Grenache comes from Dark Horse Ranch, a 160-acre Biodynamic certified ranch and vineyard owned and managed by Heath and Jason Dolan. Located 8 miles north of the town of Hopland along the banks of the upper Russian River and sitting at 750 feet of altitude, this site provides outstanding conditions for growing this late ripening, sun thirsty varietal.
Red fruit aroma such as strawberry, cranberry and raspberry dominate the nose with a layer of white pepper in the background. This wine exhibits great mid-palate with a soft tannin structure that finishes with a balanced level of acidity and spiciness.
